Lancers Dismantle First-Place Lopes

The Lancers led 8-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Amanda Argomaniz kept the inning alive with a base hit to right field to bring Galvez to the plate. Galvez jumped on the first pitch, sending it to straightaway center for a game-winning homer.
Springstead returned to the circle today, after a 12-inning, 11 strikeout performance in the series opener last night. She continued to baffle Grand Canyon batters, not allowing a hit in the first four innings of work. Springstead retired 12 of the first 13 batters she faced, with the only batter reaching base after getting hit by a pitch in the second inning.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. The GCU defense committed a series of two-out miscues that opened the door for the Lancers. Galvez reached base on an error, becoming just the second Lancer base runner of the game at that point. Anise Avalos singled up the middle in the next at-bat, and Galvez was able to score from first on an error in center field. Avalos advanced to second on the error as well, but was able to take third after being caught in a pickle when the base became uncovered.
Avalos was able to score on the next play as Halle Rosario hit a ground ball to short and was able to beat out the long throw for an infield single and RBI. With a 0-2 count, Lloyd drove the ball opposite field down the left field line beyond the reach of GCU's Maddie Dowdle. Rosario and Budinger came around to score, making it 4-0.

The Lancers extended their lead in the bottom half of the fifth. Avalos hit a leadoff single followed by a Rosario walk. A wild pitch by GCU's Lexy Coons allowed Avalos and pinch runner Makenna Stram to advance into scoring position with two outs. With Tucker at the plate, she made the Lopes pay with a double down the left field line to push the score to 8-1.
Springstead gave up just one run, on two hits, while striking out three over six innings of work. Despite a 1-2 record this week, she was outstanding in 24 innings in three games. Springstead only gave up four earned runs while racking up 19 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .242 (22-91) against Springstead this week. The Lancers stopped a six-game skid with the win. CBU is now 15-21 overall and 2-4 in league play. GCU falls to 23-14 overall, but remains the WAC leader with a 5-1 conference mark.
CBU will hit the road for a three-game WAC series at Kansas City. The opener will take place on Friday at 3 p.m. The series will conclude with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday. All three games are scheduled to be available on the WAC Digital Network.
