Lancers Rally in UMKC Series Opener

KANSAS CITY – Down one run with two outs in the seventh inning, Halle Rosario delivered with a RBI double to extend the game, and California Baptist went on to defeat Kansas City 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference series opener on Friday.

Rosario and Caitlyn Lloyd took turns with heroics throughout the game. Rosario went 3-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Lloyd also went 3-4 on the day, including the game-winning run, with an opposite-field, solo-shot homer in the top of the eighth inning.

The Lancers got on the scoreboard first in the third inning when Rosario scored on a double by Lloyd.

CBU pitcher Kellye Springstead retired seven of the first eight UMKC batters she faced before the Roos used three consecutive doubles to score a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

In the fifth inning, Brittany Galvez hit a one-out single and advanced to second base on an error. Molly Kolander entered the game as a pinch runner for Galvez. Anise Avalos flied out to centerfield in the next at-bat, allowing Kolander to move to third and bringing Rosario to the plate with two outs. Rosario singled down the left field line to score Kolander to tie the game at 2-2.

UMKC retook the lead, 3-2, after a leadoff triple by D.J. Cannon and sacrifice fly by Sydney Garcia in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth.

Alley Johnson hit a leadoff single in the top of the seventh. In the next at-bat, Galvez hit into a fielder's choice. An Avalos strikeout brought Rosario to the plate once again with a runner on and two outs. With a 1-1 count, Rosario lifted a ball to deep right field, bouncing off the wall to drive in Galvez from first base to tie the game.

In the top of the eighth, Lloyd smashed a first pitch solo shot over the left-center wall to give the Lancers a 4-3 lead.

The Lancers held UMKC at bay in the bottom half of the eighth to secure the victory. Springstead pitched her 17^th complete game of the season with eight innings of work, giving up seven hits and three runs, while striking out three. Springstead leads the WAC in wins (14) and strikeouts (107).

CBU (16-21; 3-4 WAC) and UMKC (21-16; 1-6 WAC) will resume the conference series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. Both games will be available to watch on the WAC Digital Network.
