UNLV Rallies, Lancers Fall

LAS VEGAS – California Baptist University came up short as UNLV swept the Lancers in a softball doubleheader to open a three-game non-conference series at Eller Media Stadium on Friday.

In the second game, the Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 advantage. Halle Rosario hit her fifth home run of the season with a solo shot in the first inning. The Lancers added two more to the scoreboard when Molly Kolander doubled down the left field line in the fourth.

The Rebels responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 3-2. In the top of the fourth, CBU picked up another run on a passed ball that scored Alyssa Beck to give the Lancers a 4-2 advantage. UNLV posted two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead for good at 6-4.

UNLV claimed the series opener 6-0, out hitting the Lancers 8-2. The Rebels scored a run in each of the first three innings and plated three more in the fifth. Cheyann Tucker and Anise Avalos each had singles in the second and third innings, respectively. After the hit by Avalos, UNLV pitcher Jenny Bressler allowed only one base runner the rest the way. Bressler retired the final 10 batters in order to preserve the shutout victory. The two hits by CBU were the fewest by the Lancers in 38 games since facing Oregon State on Feb. 23.

CBU moves to 21-29 overall and UNLV improves to 30-13.

The series will conclude on Saturday at noon.
