KANSAS CITY – California Baptist entered the day with hopes of winning its first-ever Western Athletic Conference series after defeating UMKC on Friday, but the Roos swept the doubleheader at the Urban Youth Academy facility in Kansas City on Saturday.

In the first game, the Lancers were defeated 4-0 despite outhitting UMKC, 6-5. CBU's Anise Avalos went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double. The Roos took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-out double by Madason Shaw, followed by a Bre Hunter homer. In the bottom of the fourth inning, CBU pitchers Giana Lopez and Sydney Truett allowed just one hit, but walked five UMKC batters combined. The lone error of the game was also committed. UMKC extended its lead to 4-0 after scoring a pair of runs. The Lancers limited the potential damage by turning a double play with bases loaded. UMKC pitcher Kailyn Packard walked just one batter while striking out eight in seven innings of work. Packard retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced in the last three innings to secure the 4-0 shutout victory.

The Lancers return to Funk Stadium to host crosstown foe UC Riverside on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CBU will also host a four-game series with a pair of doubleheaders against New Mexico State on Friday and Saturday of next week. Only three of the games will count toward the league standings as one will be a non-conference contest.

The Roos continued to use solid pitching and timely hitting as the recipe for success in game two of the twin bill. UMKC's Mia Hoveland gave up a pair of singles to CBU in the first inning, but limited the Lancer offense to only two more hits over the final six innings. Offensively, UMKC scored a pair of runs on a single by Catherine Friloux in the second inning. It was all the Roos would need, as they clinched the series with the 2-0 win. CBU's Kellye Springstead gave up both runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in six innings of work. Springstead retakes the top spot in the WAC with 112 strikeouts this season.Lancers get out of a bases loaded situation with a double play!
