SAN JOSE – California Baptist softball returned to Northern California this weekend to take part in the Silicon Valley Classic tournament. Day one was a challenging slate that started with a rematch against Colorado State, followed by a game against host San Jose State.
CBU led early in game one, but the Rams would rally late for the 2-1 win and avenge their loss to the Lancers a week before in Puerto Vallarta. Game number two on the day started off in the opposite direction with San Jose State scoring early and often, retiring the Lancers early in a 9-0 run-rule finish.
GAME ONE: CBU 1 – CSU 2
The Lancers broke open the scoring in the second inning when Molly Kolander would reach base on a fielding error, but made the most of the freebie by stealing CBU's first base this season. Now in scoring position, Kolander was brought home on Makenna Stram's first hit of the season, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
The Rams would level the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run on an infield single. Colorado State would seal the victory in the bottom of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Stram would go 2-2 in the game with the only run batted in for the Lancers, while Abby Robertson would record the Lancers only other hit against the Rams.
Giana Lopez had another strong showing in the circle, pitching a complete game while allowing just one earned run and striking out a pair of batters.
GAME TWO: CBU 0 – SJSU 9 (5 innings)
California Baptist got behind early against San Jose State and never truly got their bats in it, succumbing to a run-rule loss for the first time this season by a score of 9-0 against the host Spartans.
SJSU plated just one in the first inning but blew the game wide open in the second with six runs scored on seven hits. They capped the scoring in the bottom of the third with two more runs on three hits.
The Lancers would knock four hits in the game, even loading the bases in the top of the second with only one out, but were unable to put it all together.
Now sitting at 4-7, CBU will look to bounce back with a shift in tournament sites for tomorrow's double-header, taking on Boise State and Cal Poly at Santa Clara University at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
