OXFORD -- The California Baptist University softball team is back on the road after a thrilling extra-innings walk-off win against San Diego State during its home opener on Wednesday night. They played the first two of five games in the Ole Miss Classic, dropping game one to Missouri State 1-0 before coming back six hours later to play host Ole Miss to an 8-2 outcome in favor of the Rebels.
GAME 1: MSU 1 - CBU 0
The Bears threatened often, putting seven runners into scoring position, stranding six of them. The one that wasn't left out on the base-path scored from second in the third inning off a one-out double through the left side.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Hernandez enter the game in relief after the run scored and allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings of work after that, sitting down a career-high seven Bears via the strikeout.
Caitlyn Lloyd, Katelyn Mangrello, and Mackenzie Budinger each recorded hits in the the game, all of which came with two-outs, limiting scoring opportunities.
GAME 2: CBU 2 - MU 8
In the nightcap of day one, the Lancers took on the Ole Miss Rebels in a rematch from the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge where CBU defeated its first Power 5 opponent in program history, 4-2. The Rebels entered the game coming off of a home win against North Alabama, 6-2 on Tuesday.
The Lancers scored first as the top three batters in the lineup would all reach base on hits. Makenna Stram led off the game with a double to shallow center field and would eventually be brought in by Katelyn Mangrello's single through the left side.
Following the run by the Lancers, the Rebels would score seven unanswered runs of their own over their next five frames on just four hits.
Senior Caitlyn Lloyd collected her second home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning. The homer was her first since she hit one in the opening game of the season against UC Davis and is number 29 for her career, which puts her just one home run behind tying Krista Mann for ninth on the all-time career record list.
On the day Lloyd was 2-5 with two extra-base hits and an RBI. Mangrello was the only other Lancer with multiple hits, going 2-6 in two games, also with an RBI.
Day two of the tournament will begin with another early game, this time against the Tigers of Jackson State at 7:30 a.m. PST. The outcome of that game and the following game between Missouri State and Ole Miss will determine the sequence for the afternoon contests.
