SB PREVIEW: Lancers Host Aztecs And Visit Oxford

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University won its first-ever NCAA Division I home game last season with a convincing 8-0 victory over Fresno State.
In order to keep that tradition going, the Lancers will have to overcome an 11-6 San Diego State team Wednesday night under the lights of John C. Funk Stadium on the CBU campus.
After the home opener, CBU will be back on the road, this time to Oxford, Mississippi, to participate in the Ole Miss Classic. The Lancers will face off against Missouri State, Jackson State and Ole Miss in five games over three days.
Of the four teams the Lancers will face this week, CBU has a record with a pair of them. The Lancers battled the Aztecs in a late-season, non-conference game last year in San Diego with SDSU claiming the 2-1 victory. The Rebels and the Lancers faced off just two weeks ago in Mexico where California Baptist earned its first win against a Power 5 school in program history after defeating Ole Miss 4-2.

The Aztecs are seeing their first action since playing in The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tournament where they earned strong wins against Notre Dame and Wisconsin, and tallied respectable loses to #5 Arizona and #24 Mississippi State. The Lancers will face a team in San Diego State that has a .278 batting average at the plate and a .287 opposing batting average allowed from the circle.
At the plate, the Lancers will have to figure out how to slow down Shelby Thompson of SDSU, who holds the team leads in home runs (4), runs scored (13), and runs batted in (13) while starting all 17 games for the Aztecs.

Missouri State is coming off of back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. Though their record is just 3-6 so far this season, they have a very impressive 3-0 win against a Baylor team on Feb. 9th who was receiving national top-25 votes.
The Bears ace Steffany Dikerson could prove to be one of the tougher pitchers the Lancers have faced in this early season, coming into Friday's matchup with a 1.04 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 27 innings of work all while allowing only four earned runs in six appearances.

The Rebels and Lancers will have recent experience to draw from as the two teams will have just met 14 days prior at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. Sixteen games into the season, the Rebels have just one qualifying starter recording a batting average over .300. Autumn Gillespie has failed to reach base in a game just twice this season and safely reached seven times in a single game against UAB last Saturday after going 3-3 with a double, a home run, and four walks drawn in extra innings.
