Softball Goes Extra Innings in Season Opener

Senior Caitlyn Lloyd is off to a hot start on the very young season as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, three runs batted in and a run scored. Mackenzie Budinger tallied a pair of hits, with one being a solo homer that counted as her sixth as a Lancer.
Defensively, Tiana Patrick held down the backstop position very well in her first start as a Lancer, allowing no passed balls and throwing out a would be base stealer at third in the eighth inning.

The Lancers will travel to Sacramento State tomorrow for a pair of games, the first at 9:00 a.m. against Saint Mary's College of California and then at 11:30 a.m. against tournament co-host Sac State.
After falling into a 4-0 hole in the first inning, things picked up for the Lancers in the top of the third, as Lloyd went yard in her second at-bat of the season. She launched a three-run homer over the right field fence on a 3-2 count to cut the Aggie lead to 4-3.

Budinger must have liked the celebration at home plate and wanted one of her own, because she immediately took next pitch over the left center wall for a solo shot to even the game at four apiece.

The Lancer pitching staff struggled early, allowing eight runs on 10 hits through three innings. Reliever Kerisa Viramontes, a senior transfer from BYU, entered the game in the third and things began to settle soon after that, as she allowed just four hits and one run in 5.2 innings of work.
CBU would mount a second charge in the fourth inning, with the leadoff hitter Amanda Argomaniz reaching on an Aggie error. She advanced to second off the first career hit from freshman Nicole Stark.

After the two advanced to second and third on a groundout, Molly Kolander pushed Argomaniz home with a bloop single to right. Abby Robertson would score on a Brittany Galvez single after entering as a pinch runner for Stark, which made it 8-6 in favor of UC Davis.
Still trailing by two runs in the top of the seventh, the Lancers had Lloyd, Budinger and Patrick due up for a potential final push. Budinger doubled to left center and then was replaced by pinch runner Michaila Harrington.
Patrick worked a four-pitch walk and was pinch run for by Makenna Stram. Harrington and Stram took advantage of a wild pitch that moved both of them into scoring position with just one out. Argomaniz then launched a sacrifice fly to center field to score Harrington easily.
Stram, still on second, now needed help from Robertson to complete the rally, and she found it in a shallow single to left. Stram scored from second as Robertson was watching from second.

The tied game went into two frames of extra innings with the Lancers threatening in each, but they were ultimately unable to score. The Aggies closed the book on the contest by scoring on a single to center field in the bottom of the ninth.
