PALO ALTO -- California Baptist University softball played its final game of the Stanford Invitational this morning, taking on the host Cardinal at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. Despite scoring first, the Lancers would eventually fall to the Cardinal 4-1. The loss drops the CBU record to 5-10 heading into a home doubleheader against San Diego State on Friday night.
The game started off optimistic enough as Brittany Galvez reached base to lead off the game for the Lancers. Two batters later, Abby Robertson would send a double to the wall in right center, scoring Galvez from first.
Stanford would answer in the bottom of the first and second with two runs in each frame. After three runs had scored with another two Cardinal on the bases, starter Alyssa Argomaniz would be replaced with Gretchen Goldsmith. Argomaniz would receive the loss at the end of the game, allowing four runs, just three earned, on four hits in 1.1 inning of work.
One more run would score after the switch, which would be added to Argomaniz's tally. After that, Goldsmith would finish the game throwing 4.2 innings of shutout relief while striking out a pair and allowing just three hits.
Robertson's first inning double would be the only Lancer hit on the day, though she would also work the only walk for CBU in the top of the fourth.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lancers will take on San Diego State this weekend in a three game series. The doubleheader portion of the series will be played at Funk Stadium as a pair of home games for the Lancers followed by the series finale at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego.
