SB Preview: Lancers Head North To Take On Tigers, Gaels

RIVERSIDE – After a series win in the Crosstown Showdown last week against UC Riverside and a pair of walk-off wins against Long Beach State on Tuesday, the Lancers are trending up and stand at 9-14 overall on the season, having won four of their last five games. This week will send CBU north for a pair of doubleheaders as they challenge the Pacific Tigers and the Saint Mary's Gaels on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
The Lancer bats have been coming alive of late as the top half of their lineup has stayed consistent for a few weeks now. Leadoff hitter Brittany Galvez leads the team at the dish with a .310 batting average and a .338 on-base percentage. Katelyn Mangrello (.333) and Makayla Jordan (.303) both join her in the 300 club. Mangrello (12), Jordan (11), and Glavez (10) lead the team lead in runs batted in, while Ashley McBay has the most runs scored with 15.
Coach Bill Baber has tapped four different starting pitchers so far this season, but just Kerisa Viramontes can claim a winning record so far at 7-4 with a 4.51 earned run average. The recent reemergence of sophomore hurler Gretchen Goldsmith (1-1, 2.18 ERA) has helped bolster the staff's depth as the injury bug has become an issue.
The Pacific Tigers are currently 7-9, dropping their last two games, one against Cal Poly and the other against Cal, after winning three in a row prior to that. The Tigers own a cumulative .232 batting average and are still waiting on a player to crack double-digit runs or RBI's on the season. Pacific's pitching has been more than serviceable so far this season, combining for a 3.49 ERA and allowing more than five runs just three times so far this year.
Saint Mary's, currently 8-12 on the year, has quite a few common opponents with the Lancers. In 12 games against Sacramento State, Cal, UC Davis, Stanford, and San Diego State, the Gaels finished 6-6 with at least one win in each series, whereas the Lancers finished that same lineup with a 3-8 record. Saint Mary's slugs just .301 compared to CBU's .370, but the Gaels' small ball has produced 19 stolen bases in 24 attempts. Pitching looks to be Saint Mary's most glaring shortfall as the staff ERA is 5.65 with 93 walks given out over 20 games, an average of 4.65 freebies per game.
