4/20/2021 9:30:00 AM | Softball
RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University softball is set to begin its final stretch of nine games, all of which will take place at John C. Funk Stadium.
The Lancers' first challengers will be the Lopes of Grand Canyon University, who currently reside in third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 16-23 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Lopes are a game-and-a-half ahead of the Lancers in those standings, as CBU currently owns an overall record of 17-25-1 to go with a 5-7 conference mark.
CBU managed to take game one of last week's series against Seattle U on the road. Kerisa Viramontes earned her 12th win of the season in that victory and she is now tied for the most WAC wins with Carissa Burgess from Dixie State. Tiana Patrick and Abby Robertson brought runs in to keep the Lancers in it through five innings before a two-out triple by freshman Maile Olsen scored Robertson in the top of the seventh for the game-winning run.

LOPES AT A GLANCE
Grand Canyon is returning to WAC play after a bye week that saw the Lopes challenge the eighth-ranked Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, dropping both games by a score of 8-0. It's been a rough stretch for GCU, having lost seven of its last eight games, including a pair of WAC series against NM State and Dixie State.
Despite recent team struggles, the Lopes' star outfielder Gianna Nicoletti is thriving. The junior from Fullerton is leading her team in batting average (.393), hits (48), runs (33), walks (18), on-base percentage (.483) and stolen bases (23). Those numbers also hold up amongst the conference category leaders as she ranks no lower than fourth in the WAC in any of those statistical groups.
