The Lancers won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader on a 4-2 score in extra innings and came away with an 11-6 win in game two at Presley Askew Field. CBU improves to 34-13 on the season and 25-5 in the WAC, while NM State falls to 19-30 on the year and 16-19 in conference play. It also secures the series win for the Lancers and moves them to 4-1 in the all-time series over the Aggies.
The series will come to an end with a game at 11 a.m. Pacific on Sunday in New Mexico.
WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
Grand Canyon joins the Lancers at the top of the conference standings after sweeping its doubleheader over Tarleton State on Saturday. Both teams are now 26-5 in conference play as they hold a comfortable lead over the rest of the WAC. UT Rio Grande Valley is third in the standings at 18-12. The Lancers and the Lopes are set to square off in Arizona on May 20-22 in what will decide the conference champion.
WHERE CBU'S TRANSITION RANKS: CBU went 35-20 and won a share of the WAC title in its first Division I season in 2019 and had the 2020 campaign cut short after 15 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lancers' 35 wins ranked third out of 49 teams who have made the move to D-I since 1998.
CBU's 34 wins this year are the third most by a second-year D-I program over that time span. The Lancers have gone 68-33 in their first two full D-I seasons (2019 and 2021), which are the fourth-most wins by a program in its first two full D-I seasons.
GAME ONE
Harrison Spohn and Chad Castillo both went 3-for-4 in Saturday's opener. Spohn played a huge part in the win, with two runs batted in, a double, and a run scored in the win.

Nevertheless, CBU found itself in serious danger of losing the game in the seventh and final inning. Things were tied 1-1 going in and an error put the Aggies' leadoff runner on second and a sacrifice fly moved him to third with one out.
NM State's attempt to win the game on a squeeze bunt was botched, as the runner came home but the batter failed to get the bat on the ball, which led to the runner being tagged out at the plate. It helped the Lancers get out of the inning without allowing a run.
CBU scored three runs with the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the eighth inning. John Glenn started the inning on second and Castillo put runners at the corners with a single. Spohn drove in the go-ahead run with a single. A wild pitch and RBI single from Garret Ostrander added two insurance runs to make it 4-1.

Bryan Pope did not factor into the decision but CBU's starting pitcher held NM State to just one run over five innings. It was a bend don't break game for Pope, as he allowed six hits, three walks and struck out six.
Pope stranded eight runners through three innings and left the bases loaded in the second and third innings, thanks to some nice defense from Spohn and a big strikeout.
The Lancers scored first in the third inning. Singles from Marty Munoz, Castillo and a walk to Glenn put CBU in business. Spohn drove in the first run of the game, with a clutch two-out RBI single.

Jacob McCarvel and CJ Culpepper were strong on the mound in relief for the Lancers. McCarvel threw a scoreless sixth inning, while Culpepper got his second win of the season after throwing the final two innings.
GAME TWO
Spohn, Glenn, and Ulises Caballero all played a major factor for the Lancers in the final game on the day. The trio combined for six hits and 10 RBI, bringing home all but one of the Lancers' 11 runs in the game.
The Aggies were the first to strike in the bottom of the first, plating two runs on a two-out single to left field.
After two scoreless innings by both sides, the Lancers responded in a big way, scoring eight runs to flip the script and take an 8-2 lead.
Spohn got things started for the Lancers, driving in his fourth run of the weekend on a stand-up double to left field.

Despite the Aggies scoring three runs at the bottom half of the inning, the Lancers would score a run in the final three innings for plenty of insurance. The biggest came from Spohn, who homered in the fifth and seventh innings to make sure the Lancers came away victorious.
