SAN DIEGO - California Baptist University softball and San Diego State closed down the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Sunday afternoon, as the Aztecs finished the weekend the win over the Lancers, 3-0. The Aztec victory improves their record to 9-2 on the young season while CBU drops to an even 5-5.
The game was a pitching gem from start to finish as both teams combined for just four hits in the first five-and-a-half innings. CBU starting pitcher Jazmine Castaneda was dealing early, striking out five total batters while allowing just two earned runs. She held an Aztec team that entered the game with a .310 team batting average to just 6-for-23 at the plate on Sunday.
Castaneda received some spectacular help from her defense, highlighted by left fielder Molly Kolander, who likely saved at least one run in the top first with a diving catch. The runner on second was forced to retreat after eyeing the turn at third on the play. In total, eight of the Lancers' 18 total putouts came as a result of solid outfield play.
Kolander also recorded the Lancers' only hit on the day, a legged-out single to second in the top of the third inning. The Lancers had a tall mountain to climb as they faced Aztec ace Maggie Balint, who recorded 13 strikeouts for the second time this season, already her fourth game with 11 or more K's.
