CBU Takes On Seattle In WAC Opening Doubleheader
3/18/2022 8:01:00 PM | Softball
SEATTLE - California Baptist University softball began the Western Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a trip to take on the preseason favorites, Seattle U. The Lancers hung tough with the Redhawks in both games, but ultimately saw both rallies come up short as SU took game one by a score of 5-2 and game two 3-2.
The Lancers fall to 17-15 on the year and 0-2 in the young conference slate. Seattle improves to 16-12 while starting its WAC play 2-0.
GAME ONE
The Redhawks came out ready to play, retiring the Lancer side in the top of the first before putting up three runs in the bottom of the inning on four hits.
The Lancers would respond with their first score in the top of the third. Deja Westbrook would lead off top of the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to third on a pair of groundouts. She would later score on Sydney Soto's two-out double to get CBU on the board.
CBU would score another in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a wild pitch from the Redhawk starting pitcher, making it a 3-2 advantage for Seattle U. The Redhawks would bookend game one by scoring two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final score of 5-2.
Alyssa Argomaniz went wire-to-wire for CBU in the circle, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and struck out seven along the way.
GAME TWO
In the second half of the doubleheader, CBU threatened early after earning a pair of walks in the top of the first, but was unable to bring the runners home. Seattle again scored early, plating one in the first and two in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
The Lancers would put runners on board in every inning except the third, but were not able to string together enough offense to finish the trip around the bases until they reached the top of the seventh inning. Soto led off the final inning with a single up the middle followed by Tiana Patrick, who worked a walk to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out.
Katelyn Mangrello would do her part, singling on the first pitch she saw to score Soto and put pinch runner Samantha Demyon on second. Demyon would move to third on a wild pitch and would later score on a one out sacrifice fly from Amanda Argomaniz. The Lancer magic would run out after that as the next Lancer batter skied an infield pop-up to end the game.
Jazmine Castaneda came into the game in relief of starting pitcher Jordan Schuring in the bottom of the second after she gave up three earned runs. Castaneda threw 4.2 innings of scoreless softball, allowing just three hits and no runs with one strikeout.
