LOS ANGELES - California Baptist University softball traveled West on Tuesday for a mid-week matinee against Loyola Marymount University. The Lions claimed the home win on a 2-0 score. The result moves the Lancers' record to 18-16 ahead of this weekend's home opening Western Athletic Conference series against New Mexico State.
Alyssa Argomaniz got the start in the circle, going four scoreless innings, striking out two and allowing two hits to earn the no-decision. At the plate, Sydney Soto, Karmyna Becerra and Nicole Stark all earned walks for the Lancers against one of the nation's top pitching staffs.
LMU recorded just one hit and one walk while CBU worked a pair of walks in the first three-and-a-half innings. Action picked up in the bottom of the fourth after LMU led off the frame with a single, followed by two of the next three Lions getting free passes via walk and hit-by-pitch. LMU threatened with bases loaded and just one out, but Argomaniz induced a pair of groundouts to temporarily tame the Lions.
Loyola Marymount broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth, pairing an RBI-double with a solo home run to score two runs. The Lions would finish the game with five total hits, but the two runs would prove to be all they would need to claim the win.
