CBU Sweeps New Mexico State In WAC Home Opener Doubleheader
3/25/2022 10:34:00 PM | Softball
The Lancers move to 20-16 on the year while improving to 3-2 in the WAC. The Aggies continue their season struggles, dropping their fourth and fifth games in a row and falling to 6-20 overall and just 1-4 in WAC play.
Mackenzie San Pedro had a stellar night, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored to shoulder the bulk of the load in game two and Nicole Stark was perfect in a pair of pinch hit appearances. Seven Lancers collected multiple hits on the day, none more than Katelyn Mangrello's four, two of which were doubles.
GAME ONE
The series opened fast and furious as the Aggies wasted no time getting on the board, scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame. CBU immediately answered in the bottom of the first as Sydney Soto led-off with a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Priscilla Estrada.

Estrada would later score on a sacrifice fly from Karmyna Becerra to tie the game at two apiece.
After Alyssa Argomaniz held the Aggies to a three up, three down, top of the second, the flood gate opened for CBU offensively. Estrada, Soto and Makayla Jordan would all score from a single swing from Mangrello who collected her 11th double of the season.

Becerra would bring home Mangrello from second on the very next pitch, a single to right field. Tiana Patrick would follow that up three pitches later with the second triple of her career, lacing one to left field, scoring Becerra easily.

The Aggies would storm back late, scoring one in the sixth and three in the seventh to cut the deficit to one. They had runners on first and second after connecting on four hits earlier in the frame, but the seventh hitter for NMSU would send a popup to second to end the game.
Alyssa Argomaniz earned her eighth win of the season after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned. Jazmine Castaneda would enter with a three run lead in the sixth and go on to close out the game.
GAME TWO
The nightcap was a near a perfect opposite of game one as the two teams struggled to get their offenses started. CBU would find success first in the bottom of the second inning when freshman catcher Mackenzie San Pedro collected her first hit of the game, an opposite field single to score Maile Olsen.

The Aggies would answer with a run of their own in the top of the third, collecting four singles in the frame, but managing to plate just one runner before Castaneda forced back-to-back outs to leave the bases loaded with Aggies.
The Lancer defense was not to be taken lightly tonight, committing zero errors during the doubleheader and highlighted by an incredible over-the-shoulder catch from center fielder Samantha Demyon to end the top of the fourth inning.

San Pedro and Olsen again combined for a run, this time with the catcher lacing a double down the left field line, scoring Olsen from second. The Lancers finished the game with a strong offensive showing in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on just one hit, a fielder's choice, a wild pitch, and a passed ball before sealing the victory on a groundout.

San Pedro collected that lone hit, a one-out single to center, to put a bow on her career game at the plate. The finishing blow came off the bat of Soto who grounded sharply to shortstop who looked San Pedro back to third, but not well enough as the freshman broke for home as soon as the throw was released to first base, walking-off the Aggies in five innings.

Castaneda earned the shortened complete game win becoming the first Lancer on the pitching staff to reach 10 wins on the season. She allowed seven hits, but just one earned run, denying NMSU any free bases via the walk.
