RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball battled Weber State in a classic pitchers duel on Tuesday night, but it would go the way of the Wildcats, who took the 1-0 victory late. The result brings CBU's record to 12-11 on the year while Weber State improves to 17-4.
Lancer starting pitcher Alyssa Argomaniz maintained a no-hitter for 6.1 innings against a Weber State squad which entered Tuesday night's contest with a collective batting average of .305 through 20 games. The Wildcats were held to just two hits on the night after previously being held to a season-low of three against Texas A&M.
Argomaniz nearly collected the program's first NCAA Division I no-hitter, doing so in dominant fashion. Argomaniz struck out seven Wildcats while issuing just one walk.
As any great pitching outing like that typically does, Argomaniz got plenty of help from her defense. Second baseman Maile Olsen made a great backhanded stop at one point, but shortstop Mia Alvarez may have had the defensive play of the night, tracking a pop fly deep into center field, making the over-the-shoulder catch while falling down in the top of the fifth.
The Lancer hitters were also caught in their own battle against a dominant pitching performance, as the WSU starting pitcher struck out seven, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings. Sydney Soto collected that hit when she led off the game with a single up the middle to extend her active hit streak to six-games.
