CBU Splits With UCSD In Final Non-Conference Doubleheader
3/9/2022 9:19:00 PM | Softball
CBU pitching came ready tonight, combining to allow just eight hits during the doubleheader, striking out 13 and allowing just two earned runs. The Lancer bench was ready when called upon, smacking five pinch-hits, three of which went for extra bases, and recording three RBI.
Katelyn Mangrello shined as a pinch hitter, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI to lead CBU against UC San Diego
GAME ONE
The opening game demonstrated awesome glove work and clutch hitting by the Lancers. Mia Alvarez followed up her web gem from Tuesday with another extra effort play in left center from her shortstop position, and Amanda Argomaniz made a full effort diving grab at first to save extra bases potentially. Deja Westbrook showed speed and composure, chasing down a long out in the top of the third, likely saving runs.

Nicole Stark got the scoring going in the bottom of the second, lacing a single to the left side, which the shortstop couldn't quite handle, scoring pinch runner Michaila Harrington from second. Three batters later, Mia Alvarez singled up the middle to score Stark and give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
The Tritons would level the game in the next half inning, scoring two unearned with two outs. It would not be until the bottom of the sixth that CBU would break the game open. The Lancers would collect two runs on four hits to take a late lead.
The Lancer bench came in clutch for CBU, as Tiana Patrick, Mangrello, and Makenna Dashiell all collected pinch hits in the inning, with Patrick's double to right leading off the inning. Samantha Demyon would pinch run for her, advancing to third in the next at-bat and scoring on Mangrello's double to right center.

Westbrook re-entered for Mangrello to run and made it to third on Makayla Jordan's sacrifice fly. Westbrook would score easily on Dashiell's single to right, giving the Lancers some breathing room heading into the final inning.

Jazmine Casteneda, who came into the game in relief of starter Jordan Shuring in the top of the fourth, shut the door in the top of the seventh, inducing three infield groundouts to collect her sixth win of the season.GAME TWO
The nightcap was another great pitching showcase by both hurlers, as Alyssa Argomaniz for CBU and Jada Cecil for UCSD contained the opposing hitters to just two hits throughout the first five innings. The Tritons finally broke through in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits.
CBU again went to the bench, sending out pinch hitters for the first two at-bats in the bottom of the inning and it paid off with back-to-back hits from Raegan Cheyne and Mangrello. Kate Mangrello punched her second RBI double of the day through the right side, scoring Cheyne all the way from first.
