Lancers Complete Late-Game Rally To Down Cal State Fullerton

RIVERSIDE – An exciting late-game offensive outburst led the way for California Baptist University softball to claim victory over Big West leading Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night, 7-5. The Lancers plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overtake a two run Titan lead and close out their non-conference schedule with a big win.
Tiana Patrick and Katelyn Mangrello led the way for CBU at the plate. Patrick had her best offensive game of the season, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. She was no slouch behind the plate, throwing out two would-be base stealers. Mangrello went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, highlighted by her first career triple.
Action began immediately as the Titans opened scoring in the top of the first on a two-out double to left center. That lead did not last long as CBU answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own. Nicole Stark worked a two-out walk and was rewarded by scoring a run when Mangrello laced a triple to the right field corner.
A CSUF single and a CBU error allowed the Titans to take the lead by two in the top of the third. Stark reached again after getting plunked in the bottom of the fourth and Amanda Argomaniz reached with a two-out walk, setting the plate for Patrick who did not disappoint. The senior catcher knocked a hard hit double down the left field line to tie the game at three.
The Titans answered again with two more runs in the top of the fifth off a two-run homer to straight center field. It was nearly a three-run home run, but the leadoff hitter was thrown out attempting to steal second by Patrick, the second runner she had gunned down in the game.
Trailing by two with just six outs left to make up the difference, the Lancer bats came alive in a big way in the bottom of the sixth. Five hits along with a sacrifice fly and a Fullerton error led to CBU scoring four runs and taking a 7-5 lead. Alissa Montes De Oca started the scoring with a sac fly, followed by Patrick's second RBI swing of the night. After a double from Kenzie Yamakoshi, Makayla Jordan and Sydney Soto each hit RBI singles to build the score to its final count.
Alyssa Argomaniz, who had entered at the top of the sixth inning when CBU trailed by two, finished the game in the circle for the Lancers and earned her 10th win of the season along the way. Argomaniz allowed three hits during her two innings of work, but struck out a pair and never allowed a Titan runner past second base.
