4/19/2022 10:47:00 AM | Softball
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball returns home after downing Big West leaders Cal State Fullerton in Riverside before traveling to Orem, Utah, for a Western Athletic Conference series against Utah Valley. The Lancers enter the week at 24-23 overall with a 6-9 record in the conference.
California Baptist is on pace to set multiple Division I era milestones this season. This year's squad has already surpassed any previous groups win total, previously set at 21, and look to increase that mark with nine games remaining on the schedule. The pitching staff is also on pace to set a single-season best in earned run average, currently maintaining a 2.97 ERA.
The Lancers made a comeback for the ages in their midweek game against the Titans, plating four runs in an electric sixth inning to earn a 7-5 victory at Funk Stadium. Senior catcher Tiana Patrick went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the game, including the game-tying RBI hit in that all-important sixth inning. Amanda Hernandez threw five solid innings for CBU, but it would by Alyssa Argomaniz, who would close it out, earning her 10th win after two innings of scoreless relief work.
Argomaniz ranks among the league's best in the circle, ranking fourth with a 2.45 ERA, fifth in total strikeouts at 93, and leading the WAC with three saves. Teammate Jazmine Castaneda's 12 wins are currently tied for fourth in the conference.
SERIES INFORMATION
Opponent: Seattle U Redhawks
Dates/Times: Friday, April 22 (4 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.) | Saturday, April 23 (1 p.m.)
Location: Riverside, Calif. (John C. Funk Stadium)
Video (WDN): Games 1 & 2 | Game 3
Live Stats: Game 1 | Game 2 | Game 3
The Redhawks have won four of their five WAC series during the 2022 season, only dropping the most recent set to Grand Canyon in Seattle. The Lopes swept the series in the Emerald City, holding Seattle U to just one run scored in three games.
Despite the recent falter, the Redhawks are still a force in the West Division, holding tight to second place in the standings with a 23-18 overall record and a 9-6 conference mark. SU ranks middle of the pack in most statistical categories at this point in the season, but they are led by two of the top individual performers in the conference in Carley Nance and Stefanie Madrigal.
Nance leads the WAC in runs batted in by a wide margin as her total of 53 is eleven more than the next closest player on the list. Nance's total numbers are boosted by her shared conference lead in home runs, 13, and the third-best slugging percentage in the league at .716. All this from a two-way player who also puts up respectable pitching numbers, posting a 2.83 ERA with two wins and two saves in just 54.1 innings pitched this season.
Madrigal leads her staff in just about every major category, but more impressively, she is second in the conference with an ERA of 2.25, just 0.01 behind Ariel Thompson from GCU for the top spot. Though she did not appear in a game against Grand Canyon, Madrigal is working on a fantastic season, currently owning a record of 14-5 that is good enough for the second-best winning percentage among all pitchers with at least 10 wins this season at 73.7%.
