Lancers Walk-Off Seattle U On Friday Night
4/22/2022 10:13:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE – Friday night marked the first time California Baptist University softball hosted Seattle U since joining the Western Athletic Conference during the 2019 season. The wait was worth it, as the two teams played a pair of entertaining games. The Redhawks took an extra-inning game one by a score of 5-1, before the Lancers earned the split on the night with a 1-0 walk-off win in game two.
CBU continues to improve its NCAA Division I era program-best win count, now sitting at 25-24 overall and 7-10 in the WAC. Seattle U moves to 24-19 overall and remains in second place in the West Division with a 10-7 conference record.
Priscilla Estrada led all Lancers with three hits on the night, but Sydney Soto and Molly Kolander each recorded two hits with an RBI. Alyssa Argomaniz tossed a staff high 8.1 innings on Friday, allowing just one run on five hits. Jordan Schuring would collect CBU's win on the night, controlling game two from start to finish to pick up her third victory of the season.
The Lancer defense was on point tonight, turning three double plays, two of which ended their respective innings. No defensive effort was more impressive than Deja Westbrook's diving save in the bottom of the third in game two.
GAME ONE
The Redhawks threatened early by loading the bases in the top of the first, but starting pitcher Alyssa Argomaniz shut them down with her first of six strikeouts. Seattle U would eventually take the lead, scoring off a two-out double in the top of the third inning.
The Lancers would build the suspense, waiting until there was one out in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Westbrook began the inning with a double to left center. After moving to third on a Maile Olsen sacrifice bunt, Westbrook scored on Molly Kolander's sacrifice fly to level the game and force extra innings.
Fans were treated to three innings of free softball before Seattle scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim game one of the doubleheader.
GAME TWO
Game two was another tense, pitchers' duel as Schuring took charge in the circle for CBU. She pitched a gem, earning her second complete game shutout of the season, striking out five Redhawks without giving up a single walk. Schuring was locked in from the start, and with the help of a stout defensive effort behind her, never allowing a single Seattle U base runner past second base.
Hits were hard to come by all night for the Lancers, collecting just one in the first and sixth innings. The seventh inning was a chess match as Head Coach Mike Smith made a handful of strategic substitutions leading up to the final play.
His final moves of the game brought in a pinch runner, Samantha Demyon, and a pinch hitter, Sydney Soto, with runners on first and second. Soto took ball one before offering at the second pitch she saw. She sent a lazy fly to shallow left field, perfectly placed between three Seattle defenders, dropping to the grass and allowing the speedy Kolander to score from second for the win.
