RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball earned a milestone win today, defeating Seattle U 3-1 at Funk Stadium to claim the Lancers first series win over the Redhawks in program history. Seattle and California Baptist officially split the season series 3-3, each winning a pair at home.
CBU improves to 26-24 on the year and 8-10 in conference play. The Redhawks drop to 24-20 this season with a 10-8 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.
Jordan Schuring gave the Lancers another phenomenal outing in the circle, going 5.2 strong innings with four strikeouts and just one earned. She won both of her starts this weekend with a 0.55 ERA, nine strikeouts and just one free pass.
Sydney Soto, Molly Kolander, and Priscilla Estrada all recorded three hits on the weekend. Soto had the most dramatic hit of the series, walking off game two on Friday night. Kolander scored that walk off run while Estrada scored a run against Seattle on Saturday.
Saturday's rubber match kept true to form of the series thus far, proving to be another pitcher's duel for the first few innings. CBU broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third as Soto and Nicole Stark knocked back-to-back sacrifice flies to build a 2-0 lead.
The Redhawks answered in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to cut the deficit in half, but the Lancers would get it back immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Amanda Argomaniz singled to lead-off the inning, being swapped with pinch runner Sanae Orme on first. Orme would score from first in the next at bat, opportunistically running the bases as Maile Olsen's sacrifice bunt turned into a throwing error and allowing the speedy Orme to extend the CBU lead.
Following suite from Friday, Saturday's contest provided more incredible defensive efforts in the Lancers win. Kolander made the play to remember in a series full of memorable moments, tracking down a long fly ball in right center, fully extending and making the grab which resulted in cheers and a huge cloud of dust for effect.
