5/16/2022 8:33:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball is entering the second-to-last week of the 2022 season. The Lancers will play their final game outside of California at the University of Washington on Tuesday and then return home for a Western Athletic Conference series with Dixie State over the weekend.
CBU's return to Riverside will start a stretch of six home games over its final seven contests of the season. The Lancers went 2-2 last week but won their last two games at Seattle U, including a 13-0 win over the Redhawks behind a one-hit, complete-game and seven-inning shutout from Drew Necochea.
Washington has won seven-straight games, including three-game sweeps of USC and UCLA, to improve to 25-24 on the year. Dixie State is coming off three-straight losses to a ranked UC Santa Barbara squad as it is 19-32 on the year but 12-15 in WAC play.
WHERE THE TRANSITION RANKS
The Lancers are looking to finish strong and polish off one of the best transitions to full NCAA Division I membership ever. CBU has a 106-53 record over its first three full seasons of its D-I transition, which ranks third among transitioning teams since 1998. Florida Gulf Coast (112-53) and Dallas Baptist (109-62) are the only two teams with more wins over its first three D-I seasons.
Overall, California Baptist has a 113-61 record which already ranks ninth among transitioning teams, despite the 2020 season being cut short 15 games in due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lancers' 64.9 winning percentage ranks first among transitioning D-I programs, as Stony Brook (64.7, 112-61); Florida Gulf Coast (63.1, 139-81) and Dallas Baptist (61.2, 139-88) are the only teams to win at least 110 games at 60-percent clip or higher during its transition.
SERIES NOTES
This will be the second-ever meeting between Washington and CBU. The Huskies won the first matchup in Seattle on April 8, 2019 by just one run, 3-2. Harrison Spohn went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the game.
This is CBU and Dixie State's first and only meeting this season. The two were conference rivals in the PacWest and played each other in the NCAA Division II postseason in four of five years. The Lancers and Trailblazers renewed the rivalry last season in St. George and the four-game set was split, with CBU winning the last two games.
During the D-II and PacWest era, the Lancers won 9-2 against the Trailblazers from 2014-16, but Dixie State went 7-2 against CBU in 2017-18. The two met in the D-II West Regional in four-straight years (2014-17). The Trailblazers ended the Lancers' 2017 season with a 14-5 win in an elimination game after CBU helped end Dixie's seasons in 2014-16, with an 8-6 win-or-go-home victory in 2016, a 2-1 first-round victory in 2015 and a 5-2 season-ending win in 2014.
