BLOOMINGTON, IN – California Baptist University softball team pulled off a late win over CSUN on Saturday night, upsetting the top tournament seed to earn a chance to compete for the tournament championship on Sunday afternoon. Overall, the Lancers went 1-1 on the day, falling to the Matadors 6-3 in the afternoon before winning the finale, 3-0.
GAME ONE: CSUN 6 – CBU 3
The Lancers opened the first game of the pseudo-doubleheader against the Matadors, giving up two runs early but getting one back in the bottom half of the first as Maya Martinez sacrificed Priscilla Estrada in for the score.
CSUN would plate three more in the top o the third to open a 5-1 lead, ultimately ending starting pitcher Jazmine Castaneda's game early, despite only giving up two earned out of the five CSUN had scored.
The Lancers would get two back in the bottom of the fifth as Natalie Elias and Martinez again brought in scorers to cut the Matador lead to just 5-3. But CSUN wouldn't allow another hit in the game after the third run, adding one more insurance run of their own in the seventh.
GAME TWO: CBU 3 – CSUN 0
The nightcap was a different story, as both teams struggled to get going during the game's first five innings. Only one player, Demyon, made it past first base safely before the sixth inning, and that was off a single and an excellent jump for a stolen base.
The Lancers had the unusual experience of being the visiting team in Funk Stadium in this one, but their breakout frame was in the top of the sixth. There were two outs on the board when the action began to heat up. Martinez found her way into the move once again with a single to right field before Deja Westbrook worked a five-pitch walk. Next up was Demyon, who watched two balls float past her before she got the 2-0 pitch the Matadors would remember for all the wrong reasons.
Demyon smashed the pitch to left field, a no-doubter off the bat that sailed over the fence to the roar of a supportive Lancer crowd. Demyon was ambushed at the plate as she officially gave CBU a 3-0 lead, needing only six outs to seal the deal. Starter Presley Hosick would get those six outs in just seven batters, finishing her second career complete game allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking just one. 👋🥎
