Softball Outduels Georgia State for First Win In the Peach State

ATLANTA – California Baptist softball began its trip to Georgia with a bang on Thursday, taking down the Panthers of Georgia State by a score of 9-8.

The Panthers kicked things off in the top of the first, putting one over the left field wall to take an early 3-0 lead. It was all CBU after that, as the Lancers responded quickly with a three-run blast of their own in the top of the second, compliments of third baseman Karmyna Becerra.

The Lancers would tack on four more in the third on a passed ball and RBI singles from Maya Martinez, Ashlee Annett, and Becerra, who added to her single-game-best RBI tally. A bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning resulted in one more Lancer scoring on a fielder's choice from Samantha Demyon.

After a brief rain delay, Georgia State got their bats back in the bottom of the fourth, plating four scores of their own to make it an 8-7 game in favor of the Lancers. Each team would add one more run in the fifth to push the score to 9-8 CBU.

The CBU pitchers took to the circle on Thursday, but none more clutch than Alyssa Argomaniz, who came in and earned the save after 3.1 innings of relief work. She struck out a game-high six hitters, including the final two after GSU had managed to the tying-and-winning runs on the basepaths in the bottom of the seventh. It is her fifth career save, tying her for fourth-most all-time.

Up next for CBU is four games at the Georgia Classic in Athens. The Lancers will face the host Bulldogs in game one, which is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. Pacific time start.
