RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball was back at Funk Stadium on Saturday, hosting the 3-0 Bengals of Idaho State. ISU had spent the last two days racking up wins against USD and UC San Diego before heading to Riverside to grapple with the Lancers. The Bengals wouldn't get them easily, but they would take both games from CBU by scores of 4-3 (8 innings) and 3-2.
GAME 1: CBU 3 - ISU 4 (8)
The Bengals jumped out to an early lead in the first, loading the bases and legging out an infield single to take a 1-0 lead. CBU would respond loudly in the fourth as Kalena Burns knocked CBU's first hit of the game well over the center field wall, bringing in Sydney Soto and giving the Lancers a one-run lead.
ISU would level the game in the next half-inning, plating a run before a run-down tag could be applied for the third out of the inning. Each half-inning in the sixth and seventh produced base runners, but nothing more than that.
Idaho State struck first in the extra inning, scoring the runner placed on second to begin the frame, and their first batter of the inning as well to go up 4-2. The Lancers were methodical in the bottom of the eighth as Priscilla Estrada laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Bobbiann Pratt to third. Two batters later, Merissa Borkowski slapped an infield single to score Pratt, but the final Lancer batter of the frame would ground out to third to end the game.
Starter Jazmine Castaneda lasted three innings, allowing six hits but just one earned run before Presley Hosick came in as relief. The sophomore would work her way into a potential win scenario but allowed two runs, just one earned, and would be left holding the loss after five innings and 95 pitches.
GAME 2: CBU 2 - ISU 3
The second game of Saturday followed a similar script, with ISU scoring early on a solo shot in the second, followed by CBU leveling the game at 1-1 in the fourth as freshman Kate Penberthy's sac bunt scored Soto easily. The Bengals would pull ahead again in the fifth inning as an unearned run made it a 2-1 game.
A lead-off double, followed by another double two batters later, extended the ISU lead in the top of the sixth. Penberthy again came through with the RBI in the bottom of the sixth, but a 1-2-3 seventh inning sealed the victory for the visiting side.
Friday's game one winner Morgan McConnell went another full seven innings against Idaho State in the late game. She had another quality outing, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts, but didn't get enough to earn a second win in two days.
The Lancers will wrap up this weekend's action as planned, taking on UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Sunday's single game will be streamed on ESPN+ and have live stats available for free.
