Lancers Can't Finish Late Rally Against Princeton

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball played the penultimate game of their 12-game homestand on Tuesday night, hosting the Ivy League favorites, the Princeton Tigers. In a long game that saw the two sides combine for 14 hits, the visitors would end the night victorious by a score of 3-1.

Princeton took an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the second. The Lancers would answer in the bottom of the third when Merissa Borkowski reached on an infield single, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored off a hard-hit ball from Sydney Soto to centerfield, beating the play at the plate.

The Tigers would take the lead in the fourth and add an insurance run in the fifth while holding fast on defense and forcing the Lancers into four left on base in those same innings. Reliever Presley Hosick recorded the game's first 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to give CBU a fighting chance with their 8-9-1 hitters due up.

Freshman Matti Severns would lead off with a single up the middle, but CBU would only get one on safely in the inning. In the final at-bat, Borkowski represented the tying run at the plate but couldn't connect, ending the game at the plate. Borkowski had a strong night overall, scoring the only run for CBU and flashing the leather in the first inning with an impressive diving catch.

Alyssa Argomaniz got the start and went four innings, allowing just four hits and two runs, with just one being earned, but picked up the hard-luck loss in the end, the first of her season.

CBU wraps up its longest homestand of the season on Wednesday night when they host Rutgers University, the only Power 5 opponent on the schedule this season. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at John C. Funk Stadium.
