RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist softball picked up their fourth shutout of the season on Saturday evening after downing Southern Utah for the third time this weekend 6-0. CBU picks up their first series sweep of the season as they improve to 17-16 on the year and are now 4-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The weekend sweep places the Lancers at the top of conference standings, tied with Utah Tech.
Kate Penberthy was the catalyst in the first inning that gave CBU an early 2-0 lead after her single down the left-field line brought home a pair of runners. The Lancers would not score again until the fifth inning when Merissa Borkowski's single brought home both Matti Severns and Priscilla Estrada. Maya Martinez closed out the day with a two-RBI double to push the Lancers to a 6-0 victory.
On the pitching side, Morgan McConnell held the Thunderbirds to no runs and just six hits after relieving Alyssa Argomaniz in the second inning. McConnell picked up a pair of strikeouts and her fifth pitching win of the season after dealing a total of six innings. Kayla Lyon showed out again with two hits and a run after her phenomenal first day against SUU, including a pair of home runs and three hits.
CBU will be back in action on Tuesday for another conference series against WAC favorites Grand Canyon for a midweek match-up in Arizona.
