RIVERSIDE --- The California Baptist baseball program will welcome UT Arlington on Thursday evening for an Easter weekend series as the squads continue Western Athletic Conference play. The Lancers sit at the top of the conference standings as they enter the weekend 5-1, while the Mavericks come to Riverside with a 6-3 record in WAC play.
THE LANCERS AT A GLANCE
After dropping the first game of their series with Tarleton, the Lancers picked up a pair of wins and their second WAC series win before returning home to walk off CSUN in an inning thriller for a three-game winning streak. During their series with the Texans, eight different Lancers homered during the second game of the weekend for a new CBU baseball program record as they downed TSU 22-4 for their largest margin of victory in conference play this season.
Michael Carpentier and Mitchel Simon shined during last week's games, as both batted over .415 and notched four doubles each. Carpentier carded a .526 batting average and had 10 hits, moving himself up to the second-most doubles in the NCAA. Simon picked up a pair of home runs, eight hits, and plated six runs for the Lancers. On the pitching side, Brandon Downer had a fantastic day on the mound during the rubber match on Sunday, throwing seven innings and sitting down nine Texans after allowing just 2 earned runs. Ryan Hetzler continues to show off an experienced performance, as he left the bases loaded during the bottom of the ninth after striking out the Tarleton batter with just four pitches.
WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Nicholas Dumesnil was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his outstanding individual performance this past week. The sophomore tallied four hits, two RBI, and a home run during the Lancer's midweek tilt against Dartmouth. The outfielder continued to impress as the squad headed to Texas for the WAC weekend series and nailed two more homers, picking up another three hits and three RBI. Dumesnil rounded out the week with a .467 batting average and 1.067 slugging percentage for a dominating performance at the plate. The WAC Player of the Week award marks the Lancer's second of the season and Dumesnil's first of his career.
