ABILENE, TX--- It was a home run derby at Crutcher Scott Field on Friday afternoon for the California Baptist baseball team against Abilene Christian. The Lancers took down ACU twice behind nine home runs across 18 innings, boasting two 16-5 and 12-4 wins. CBU improves to a seven-game winning streak and 13-4 in WAC play while solidifying a 26-13 overall record.
Nicholas Dumesnil was the name to know after the pair of wins for the Lancers and got things started from his first at-bat. The sophomore outfielder kicked off the first game of the day with a solo shot over right field for an early CBU lead. He struck again in the top of the third with an RBI double down the left-field line before Matthew Darr joined in, lacing a single that brought home two more runs in favor of the away team. The Lancers continued to string together offensive pushes, like a pair of home runs from Josh Paino and Mitchel Simon in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. A three-run inning in the seventh and another four runs in the ninth ultimately secured the first win of the weekend, highlighted by a solo homer from Connor McGuire and Dumesnil's second bomb of the day.
The second game of the day began more competitively between the two squads, starting with a trio of scoreless innings. Paino opened the floodgates in the fourth inning with an RBI double that spiraled into a five-run inning for the Lancers. ACU tacked on a lone run in the bottom of the fourth, but California Baptist answered after scoring two runs on a pair of wild pitches from the home team. The Wildcats responded again in the fifth with four runs to cut CBU's lead to three, but Dumesnil's third home run of the day kickstarted another three-run inning to push the Lancers ahead 10-4. In true CBU fashion, Paino and Darr tied a bow on the day with two more home runs to secure the series win.
Dumesnil paced the Lancer offense with seven hits, six RBI, and three home runs against the Wildcats, while Darr followed suit with six hits and four RBI for one of his most impressive performances across 18 innings this season. The Lancer pitching staff tossed 14 strikeouts during the doubleheader as Nathan Hemmerling shined on the mound, throwing four innings while sitting down five Wildcats and allowing just a single hit.
Due to an incoming storm in the Abilene area, the WAC series will continue on Sunday morning at 8 A.M. (PST) as the Lancers will be on the hunt for their third conference series sweep this season.
