Late Lancer Rally Falls Short In Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball pushed up the annual Crosstown Showdown by a day to avoid weather on Wednesday night. However, that didn't stop UC Riverside from washing away the CBU victory by holding onto an early lead. The Highlanders took an early 4-0 lead and held on for the 4-2 win on Tuesday night to reach 4-3 on the season. The loss drops CBU to 3-3 with their annual CBU Classic Tournament this weekend.

The Highlanders wasted no time getting the scoring starting by posting a pair of runs in the top of the first. They would double that lead in the top of the third on a hard-hit double to the left-center wall. CBU would answer quickly at the bottom of the third, but only matching what UCR had posted earlier in the inning, as Kate Penberthy and Kalena Burns each hit a run to make it 4-2. It appeared the Lancers were starting a rally in the bottom of the seventh as true freshman pinch hitter Jasmine Goins worked a leadoff walk, but a strikeout and two flyouts would strand her on first to end the contest.

Morgan McConnell started in the circle for CBU, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits while striking out four. Annika Hollingsworth came in for clean-up duty in the top of the seventh, eventually loading the bases but dealing with the last two Highlanders via strikeout and lineout to avoid further damage.

Though a midweek storm is estimated to drop nearly three inches of rain on Riverside from Wednesday into Friday morning, as long as the skies clear, the well-drained turf Funk Stadium field should be ready for the annual CBU Classic this weekend. Seattle U, Utah State, and San Diego will join the Lancers for eight games this weekend. CBU will play five games, the first of which will happen Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in Funk Stadium against the Torreros of San Diego.
