RIVERSIDE - The California Baptist softball team dropped the Sunday doubleheader of the CBU Classic, falling first to Utah State 7-3, before the marathon finale slipped through their grasp in the 10th inning, 2-1 against San Diego. The Lancers finish the week with a new season record of 5-6 with a mid-week game against Hawaii on the docket before heading out to Arizona to play in the ASU/GCU Invitational.
GAME ONE: CBU 3 - UTAH STATE 7
The early game got a slow start as neither team managed a hit until there were two outs in the top of the third, but the added pressure seemed to work for Utah State as they posted three runs with those two outs on the board to build an early lead. CBU answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Malachy Russell-Millen, and an RBI single from Stevie Robison.
The Aggies added two more runs in the fifth, followed by the Lancers matching half of that in the bottom half. Utah State would plate single runs in the sixth and seventh that created a deficit that CBU was unable to overcome.
GAME TWO: CBU 1 - SAN DIEGO 2 (10)
Sunday's finale started fast as USD got on the board in the top of the first off of Lancer starter Annika Hollingsworth. The freshman stayed cool though, striking out the next Torero and inducing a groundout to first to end the inning.
CBU answered in the bottom of the second, after CBU loaded the bases, including Kalena Burns taking a pitch off her helmet for a free base, a single back to the pitcher from Valerie Alvarez, and the first-collegiate hit by Jasmine Goins. That set up a patient at-bat by Russell-Millen who worked an RBI walk to tie the game.
The pitcher's duel persisted into extra innings until the Toreros managed to secure a run with their free runner in the top of the inning but CBU could not match it. Hollingsworth was an absolute star in the circle though, posting career-highs of 10 innings pitched, 119 pitches, nine strikeouts while allowing just one earned run in the top of the first.
CBU will play one more home game before hitting the road next weekend, hosting the University of Hawaii on Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
