Lancers Fall in Rubber Match Against Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, UTAH - California Baptist dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon as Southern Utah rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the rubber match 6-5. The result drops CBU to 15-17 on the year and 3-3 in Western Athletic Conference play.

Seven Lancers recorded hits on the day, but Sydney Soto was the lone CBU player to record multiple hits. Soto went 2-3, scoring a run, bringing one in, and reaching safely a third time on a hit-by-pitch. Five different Lancers scored all five runs and recorded the RBI, with Soto, Kate Penberthy, Matti Severns, and Jasmine Goins making it on both lists.

Starter Annika Hollingsworth pitched five strong innings, allowing six hits but just one earned while striking out three. The freshman was up to the task even when the setting was at its peak stress level, like in the fifth inning when the Thunderbirds had two runners in scoring position with one out and bases loaded with two outs. Still, Hollingsworth induced a shallow fly to left field to end the inning.

SUU scored the first run of the game in the third, but CBU would slowly build their lead with two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth, and one more in the seventh. Unfortunately, the Thunderbirds found another gear in the bottom of the seventh and plated five runs while managing to avoid recording a single out to complete their comeback.

The Lancers will be back at Funk Stadium next weekend to host the reigning conference champions, Grand Canyon. Friday's doubleheader will also be Community Day, so families are encouraged to come early and enjoy the atmosphere, including inflatable fun options, food trucks, and much more! Friday's action begins with game one at 4:00 p.m.
