Softball Drops Series Finale to Utah Valley

RIVERSIDE - After securing the series win with a doubleheader victory on Friday night at Funk Stadium, California Baptist softball had a conference opening sweep in their sights. Unfortunately, the Wolverines would come up with a four-run sixth inning to avoid the sweep and take the getaway game by a score of 6-1. The Lancers remain over .500 at 13-12 on the year and 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play, with a conference schedule bye week upcoming.
Seven Lancers recorded a hit on Saturday, but only leadoff hitter Priscilla Estrada would tally an RBI as her second-inning sacrifice bunt scored pinch runner Jasmine Goins to make it a 2-1 game. Starting pitcher Morgan McConnell was looking for her second win of the series, and was in a good groove for the first five innings, allowing just one earned, one walk, and two strikeouts before the Wolverines finally figured her out after nine innings of work. A home run, a two-run triple, and an RBI single tripled the Utah Valley scoreline in the sixth inning.
Half a dozen Lancer pinch hitters tried their luck in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, with only Kenadie Katje finding success with a two-out single in the seventh, her first career hit.
Next up, CBU will host a standalone game against UC San Diego on Tuesday, March 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
