RIVERSIDE - California Baptist softball will take momentum into Saturday's rubber match after winning the second game of Friday's doubleheader in run-rule fashion, 10-2, in six innings. Matti Severns paced the Lancers at the plate in both games, going 4-7 with three runs scored and two RBI.
GAME ONE: CBU 2 - UTA 4
Home runs in the first and fifth innings got UT Arlington off to a hot start in game one, plating one more on a sacrifice fly to go up 4-0 before the sixth inning. The Lancers fought back in the sixth with a Kalena Burns RBI single and added another run an inning later with a Severns RBI single, but the Mavs would shut down the rally with a pair of fly-outs to end the game.
Lili Arana pitched a commendable complete game, holding UTA to just four earned on five hits. However, nine walks would be too much to overcome despite looking strong through 128 pitches.
GAME TWO: CBU 10 - UTA 2 (6 Inn.)
The nightcap was a very different story. It started similarly with UTA scoring first, an unearned run on a groundout to second, but it was all Lancers after that. CBU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on a fielder's choice bunt, two singles, and a defensive error, all with one out, to take a commanding lead early on.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Valerie Alvarez and Makenna Dashiell in the bottom of the fifth made it a 7-1 game before the Mavs took one back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run.
The Lancers decided the bottom of the sixth would be the last inning. It started as Severns reached safely for the fifth time after getting hit by a pitch with a full count and advancing to second and third via wild pitches. Priscilla Estrada brought Severns home on a single through the right side, followed immediately by an RBI double from Kate Penberthy that scored Estrada from first. Penberthy moved to third on an infield groundout, setting up Burns with the winning run just 60 feet away and one out. Burns took a 2-0 pitch and nearly hit it through the wall in right-center, scoring Penberthy easily and walking off the Mavs with a standup double.
Morgan McConnell was electric in the circle in game two. She threw a complete game while allowing just three hits and one earned run and struck out six while needing just 64 pitches to secure her fifth win this season.
The Lancers will try to secure the series win tomorrow afternoon against the Mavs in the rubber match scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
