CBU Battles #7/8 UCLA In Riverside

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball checked a new box on Tuesday night, hosting a ranked team for the first time in the Division I era. The #7/8 UCLA Bruins came to Riverside with an eight-game win streak after a road sweep of #21 Ohio State this past weekend. The Bruins proved their ranking right with a 10-1 win at Funk Stadium. CBU falls to 17-23 on the season with a three-game Western Athletic Conference series on the horizon this weekend

The Bruins struck first with a pair of runs in the first and one more in the second. They blew the game open in the third with a seven-run effort that included a grand slam. UCLA's bats would be held in check after that, recording zero hits in the fourth and fifth innings, but the damage was done.

The Lancers manufactured a small-ball run in the fourth inning to avoid the shutout. Kate Penberthy led off the inning with a single, followed by another single from Ashlee Annett and an RBI single from Kalena Burns. Penberthy would highlight the Lancer offense against the Bruins, going 3-3 with a run scored against a pitching staff that has allowed just three batters all season to record at least three hits in a single game. Now, Penberthy is the fourth.

CBU resumes WAC action on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against UT Arlington at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. The fourth-place Mavericks are two games ahead of the Lancers in the standings, making this a crucial three-game series with the WAC Tournament fast approaching.
