CBU Piles on the Runs in Friday’s Split

LAS VEGAS, NV --- It was a Friday split for the Lancers, as CBU returned to Eller Media Stadium for day two of the UNLV Leadoff Classic. Beginning with a neck-and-neck battle against Purdue and ending with a shutout of UIC, the CBU bats are still hot in the desert heading into day three.
CBU is now 2-1 after Friday's split. The Lancers posted 20 runs on the day, giving CBU a 9.3 runs per game average early in the season.
Right-hander Emily Darwin got the nod in the opener against Purdue. The three-time WAC champion logged a total of 4.1 innings of work, with 1.2 innings of relief from Annika Hollingsworth occurring in the middle of Darwin's outing. Darwin allowed five runs (four earned) across five hits and three strikeouts.
It took five innings for the Lancers to put a run on the board, and once they did, it was hard to get them to stop. The first two crossed home on a double by Kenzie Farrier-Pilon. An RBI single from Ashlee Annett, followed by a sacrifice fly from Makayla Medellin, continued the rally. The big blast then came off the bat of Madalyn Martin, who launched a solo shot to cut Purdue's lead to 8-5.
Three more runs crossed home in the sixth after a Purdue run in the fifth, setting up for one final charge at a win or extra innings in the seventh. CBU put runners on the corners with one out, but a line drive to the second baseman set up a game-ending double play.
Matti Severns ended game one 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Farrier-Pilon and Annett each totaled a pair of hits.
It would be Martin who got the nod in game two as CBU squared off with the Flames of UIC. Coming off her first collegiate home run in the opener, Martin added to the moment with her first collegiate shutout in the circle. The sophomore only needed five innings as she held the Flames to two hits with three strikeouts.
More special moments would come in the batter's box, starting in the second when Ella Bakholdin drove in her first two collegiate runs with a double in the gap. Brooklyn Bassett then drove her in with the first collegiate hit and RBI of Bassett's career. Bethany Millen later added her first collegiate hit in the fourth with an RBI double to right-center.
The special scene continued in the bottom of the fourth when Kimberly Westover was called on to pinch hit. Making her first collegiate plate appearance, Westover launched a two-run home run to deep left, setting the score to 12-0.
CBU racked up 22 hits on the day, giving them an average of ten hits per game to start the season.
The UNLV Leadoff Classic wraps up for the Lancers on Saturday with two more games at Eller Media Stadium. CBU will get a second look at Purdue to start the day, then wrap up the weekend against UNLV at 3 p.m.
Saturday's games are slated for 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
