LAS VEGAS, NV --- Day three of the UNLV Leadoff Classic brought to an end CBU's time in Las Vegas, as the Lancers hit the field twice for rematches with Purdue and UNLV. The day ended in a split for the second day in a row, sending the Lancers back to Riverside 3-2 on the season.
CBU beat UNLV twice while in Vegas, adding a win against UIC as well on Friday. The Lancers dropped both meetings with Purdue, including Saturday's 9-3 final.
The Lancers hit two home runs in their loss to the Boilermakers, the first coming in the top of the first inning when Ashlee Annett sailed her first long ball of the year. Madalyn Martin added her second homer of the year in the seventh.
Purdue countered CBU's early run with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. They added six more runs in the middle innings, giving the Boilermakers a 9-2 advantage entering the sixth. The Lancers had their chances, loading the bases in the third, fourth, and seventh, but each time they failed to plate a run.
Miranda De Nava was credited with the loss, her first of the season, after allowing six runs on eight hits across 5.1 innings in the circle. Martin recorded two outs in relief before head coach Brandon Telesco brought De Nava back into the game.
Telesco turned to Emily Darwin in the finale, and she produced 4.1 innings, leading to her first win with CBU. Darwin allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts. De Nava entered in relief to record the final eight outs, six coming via strikeout, as she picked up her first save of the year.
Syndey Peterson drove in two of the Lancers' four runs in the 4-1 win, starting with a bunt single in the first and then adding an RBI single in the fourth. Annett also added an RBI single in the seventh.
The Lancers picked up nine hits in the win against the Rebels. Peterson, Annett, and Kenzie Farrier-Pilon also picked up multiple base knocks in the winning effort.
Now the Lancers get to hit the field at John C. Funk Stadium as the CBU Classic kicks off on Thursday. The CBU Classic will consist of 16 games over five days, with the Lancers playing in six of them.
CBU's first home test will be LMU on Thursday night. View the full CBU Classic schedule HERE.
