PROVO, UT--- It was a wild Thursday afternoon in Utah after a nearly four-hour series-opener between California Baptist and Brigham Young saw the Lancers emerge victorious. CBU secured a 13-11 win thanks to another offensive masterclass by Bryce McFeely to improve the Lancers' record to 12-3.
It was all CBU through the top of the fifth inning, as Bryce McFeely kicked things off in the first frame with an RBI single for an early lead. He would return in the third inning with a three-run homer, his third of the week, before Cole Hansen followed it up with a two-RBI double. BYU found its way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot, but Connor Ross responded for the Lancers in the next inning with a home run of his own. In the same inning, Carter Eberhard knocked his second dinger of the year to put the Lancers ahead 8-1.
Things got dicey for the California Baptist pitching staff in the bottom of the fifth after BYU plated nine runs, but Gary Adcock's squad settled in again in the snowy weather and continued to battle at the plate. The comeback was slow and steady, featuring a walked-in run thanks to a solid Chris Ramirez at-bat before McFeely would kick start an offensive storm in the top of the eighth and come in clutch again this week with his second homer of the day. Pinch hitter Cole Howarth drove in another run with an RBI single before Matt Chavez would secure the lead for the Lancers with a sacrifice fly that brought home Connor Ross. Diesel Toth finished the inning with another sacfly to ensure the 13-11 victory.
McFeely led the way with three hits and five RBI to kick off the weekend in Provo, while Connor Ross also had an exceptional day at the plate with four hits and three runs. From the mound, the CBU pitching staff accrued 13 strikeouts and allowed just four free passes. The win over BYU marks the fourth time the CBU baseball program has beaten a Big 12 opponent.
Game two of the competitive series is set for tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time as CBU goes for the series win over BYU.
