RIVERSIDE --- The final series of the regular season gets underway this weekend at John C. Funk Stadium, and the stakes could not be any higher. With three games remaining, and Tarleton State coming to town, the regular season champions of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) could be decided as soon as Friday night.
CBU enters the final weekend of the season with a one game lead in the WAC standings and are guaranteed a top two seed in next week's conference tournament. The team the Lancers lead, however, is their next opponent, Tarleton State.
A champion will be crowned this weekend, potentially as early as Friday night.
For the Lancers to clinch the outright WAC Championship and the top-seed in the conference tournament, CBU will need to win at least two-of-three this weekend. With one win, the Lancers will clinch at least a share of the conference title, but they must win two games to be crowned the top seed in the tournament. A sweep of Friday's doubleheader could wrap up the title before the series finale on Saturday.
On the flip side, Tarleton will need to sweep the Lancers in order to clinch the outright championship. The Texans can, however, clinch the top-seed with two wins this weekend, as that will secure a season-series victory over the Lancers.
The WAC Tournament will be hosted by Tarleton State next week in Stephenville, TX. The action begins on Wednesday with the three seed taking on the six seed, and the four seed playing the five. CBU and Tarleton will get to wait until Thursday to open their postseason experience. It will be a double elimination tournament, with a champion being crowned on Saturday, May 9.
But before the postseason begins, the Lancers will first honor four seniors who will be playing their final three games in Riverside this weekend. Those seniors are Ashlee Annett, Emily Darwin, Makayla Medellin, and Malachy Russell-Millen. The senior ceremony will take place on Saturday following the conclusion of the game.
Medellin has made history in her first season with the Lancers. The senior outfielder owns the CBU Division I era single-season records for home runs (12), RBI (53), and runs scored (50). She holds a narrow lead in the runs column over freshman Kenzie Farrier-Pilon who enters the weekend with 46.
Farrier-Pilon leads the Lancers with her .392 batting average and 17 doubles.
Another record the Lancers could break this weekend would come from sophomore Miranda De Nava. De Nava, who enters the weekend with a 16-7 record and a 2.32 ERA, needs three more strikeouts to match the single-season record (153). De Nava's 150 strikeouts are tied for 26th in Division I.
The final series of the regular season begins on Friday with a doubleheader scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and then concludes with Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN+, but limited tickets are still available HERE.
