ST. GEORGE, Utah --- Carli Jones ripped a grand slam to power Dixie State (Utah) to a 9-6 victory over the NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist, as the Lancers close out the Red Rock Invitational with an afternoon split.
The Lancers (3-1) had blasted Fort Lewis (Colo.) by a 10-2 margin in the early game, as Casandrah Carreon, Sara Goforth and Geanie Jenkins all 3 homered in the route.
The longball was just the second of Goforth's career, a 3-run shot that capped a 5-run fifth inning. Jenkins had hit a solo bomb to lead off the inning, as the Lancers took the 10-2 decision on the fifth-inning mercy rule.
Candice Thomas went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs (one earned) on 6 hits and a walk, while striking out 2 to pick up her first win of the season.
Thomas was hit for the loss in the nightcap, however, as the Rebels came back from a 6-3 deficit with a 6-run sixth inning that was mostly fueled by Jones' grand slam. The bases-clearing blast was preceded by a 2-run single from Dabney McEntyre, as Dixie State came back for the 9-6 victory.
Sarah Hurlbut had knocked a 2-run single to put the Lancers in a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, and Kelly Maconachy drove in the third run of the inning to back Amy Thomas, who went the first 3 frames, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned), walked 2 and struck out 4.
Candice Thomas (1-1) was hit with the loss. She went 3 innings and allowed 6 earned runs on 6 hits while issuing 2 free passes and striking out none.
Dixie State's Jessi Dunn picked up the win despite allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits and 8 walks in 6 innings. She also struck out 3 Lancers. Britni Maglish pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save.
