Blazing Past the Trailblazers

The Lancers hold onto their first-place standings in the PacWest, sitting 30-7 overall and 22-4 in conference. The Trailblazers move to 34-6 on the year, 18-6 in the PacWest.
"I think it really shows how this team has no quit in them," said Coach Bill Baber, who won his 300th career game yesterday. "After losing a tough 10-inning game to bounce back and mercy a good team is amazing!"
CBU took the first lead of the day off a two-RBI Anise Avalos single in the top of the second. Hannah Thieroff led the frame off with a walk and Halle Rosario doubled to join her on base before the duo came home on Avalos' deep hit to center, 2-0.
Dixie State came firing back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs to jump in front 6-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Lancers put on their rally caps and tied the game up, 6-6. With two runners on and two outs, Caitlyn Lloyd went long, turning on a pitch and sending it over the fence at left field to put the Lancers within one, 6-5. Brittany Galvez then stepped into the batter's box and knocked a homer of her own to even the score at 6-6.
Neither team would score in the eighth or ninth, forcing the tie-breaker rule to be put in place. It puts a runner on second base to start the inning and CBU took advantage of it. Cheyann Tucker drilled a two-run home run on the second pitch she faced to put the Lancers up 8-6.
The Trailblazers still had a chance to respond and they did just that, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the frame to steal the 9-8 result.
Similar to the opener, the Lancers scored first in the top of the second of the nightcap. Ali Subia led off with a single down the right-field line and Rosario joined her on base with a single to left. Avalos then doubled to send Subia home, 1-0, before a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Springstead scored Rosario, 2-0. Galvez gave Avalos the green light home with a base hit up the middle to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
CBU was just heating up as it would score two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth to hold a commanding 9-0 lead.
Rosario homered with Tucker on board in the third, 5-0, before Thieroff drove in two runs with a single just inside foul territory down the left-field line in the fourth. The Lancers put the final dagger in in the fifth as Springstead blasted a two-run home run with Tucker on board, 9-0.
Dixie State needed two runs in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive, but once again Iveth Alvarado and her defense held down the fort. She struck out a batter in the frame before ending the inning by fielding a grounder and tossing it over to first to seal the 9-0 victory, her fifth of the year.
"I can't say enough about how proud I am of Iveth," added Baber. "She stepped up and pitched two fantastic games!"
The Lancers return home for just two more doubleheaders, first taking on Biola on Saturday, April 21, beginning at noon. CBU closes the regular season at home on May 3 with a doubleheader against Academy of Art, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
