RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University found itself in a pitcher's duel that led to extra innings in its home opener with San Diego State on Wednesday night at Funk Stadium.
Makenna Stram and the Lancers were winners in their first game at Funk Stadium this season. The junior right fielder drove in the one and only run in the bottom of the eighth, as she laced a 2-2 pitch into right field for the walk-off, run-scoring single.
It secured the win for Kerisa Viramontes, who was phenomenal in the circle for the Lancers. The senior threw all eight shutout innings in which she allowed just three hits, five walks and struck out 12.
San Diego State is a storied softball program that drop to 11-7 this season, and owns impressive wins over Notre Dame and Wisconsin this year. The Aztecs are projected to finish second in the Mountain West Conference this year, and have 11 NCAA Division I Tournament appearances in history – most recently enjoying an eight-year streak from 2008-15.
Freshman catcher Katelyn Mangrello led CBU's offense with two hits, while Nicole Stark doubled for the lone extra-base hit of the game. The Lancers improve to 5-10 and will head to the Ole Miss Classic this weekend where they will face Missouri State, Ole Miss and Jackson State.
With the international tiebreaker rule in play, both teams started the eighth inning with a runner on second base. SDSU failed to get down the sacrifice bunt for the first out, but threatened to score the first run after a one-out walk and an error put two runners in scoring position.
That's when Viramontes came up with her 12th and biggest strikeout of the night to end the frame.
CBU redshirt sophomore and Weber State transfer Ali Belloc executed the sacrifice bunt perfectly to move Molly Kolander to third with one out. Stram then came through for the Lancers, working her way into a 2-1 count before driving the 2-2 offering into right field for the win.
Viramontes took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, and got the first out in five of the eight innings in the game. She stranded eight Aztecs on the bases on the night, including four in scoring position. SDSU batted .083 (1-12) with runners on base and 0-9 with them in scoring position.
The right-handed pitcher and transfer from BYU overcame a leadoff walk in the second inning by striking out the side. A leadoff walk for the Aztecs in the top of the fourth was erased when the runner was caught attempting to steal second on the catcher, Mangrello. SDSU added two-out singles in the inning, but both were stranded by another clutch Viramontes strikeout.
San Diego State's leadoff single in the seventh was all for naught after a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts from Viramontes.
