SACRAMENTO – California Baptist softball won in the state capital for the second day in a row scoring early and in bunches to defeat UC Santa Barbara 7-2. The Lancers hold a 2-2 record with an opportunity tomorrow to get above .500 against Idaho State.

The Lancers were the designated visitors in the game and wasted no time getting on the board. Mackenzie Budinger launched her second home run of the season with Abby Robertson on-base, giving CBU an early 2-0 lead. Last season it took Budinger 15 games to get her second homer compared to the three games and two-thirds of an inning in 2020.

Both teams were quiet after the homerun, combining for just one hit in the next two-and-a-half innings. CBU would roar back into the game at the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on just two hits. The inning was highlighted by Brittany Galvez, smashing a 3-run double to the gap in right-center with the bases juiced. Michaila Harrington, Molly Kolander, and Ali Belloc all scored on the hit making it a 6-0 game in favor or CBU.

CBU would add an insurance run late as Budinger sent a sac fly to left field, scoring Robertson to make it a 7-2 game.

Kerisa Viramontes had her best outing of the young season, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. In the end, Viramontes struck out five while allowing just two earned runs in a 98 pitch, complete-game victory.

CBU got hits when it mattered most, going 2-2 with runners on third with less than two outs, and played flawless defensive ball on the 17 outs put into play.

The Lancers will wrap up the NorCal Kickoff Tournament Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. when they take on the Bengals of Idaho State in Davis.
