3/4/2020 2:18:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University has a five-game slate coming up this week, as the Lancers will host a doubleheader against Michigan State on Thursday and a single game against Southern Utah on Saturday, before heading to single-game contests at UC Riverside on Sunday and Tuesday.
CBU will also host a neutral-site game between Michigan State and Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
This week will mark the first meeting in program history between CBU and MSU, while the Lancers hold a 2-0 series record against SUU on the dirt diamond. Sunday and Tuesday will mark the 54th and 55th games between the Lancers and the Highlanders since 1987.
The Lancers will enter the week with the reigning Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week in freshman Katelyn Mangrello. The backstop hit .524 (11-21) last week, while recording six runs batted in, a run scored, her first career home run and the game winning RBI in extra innings against Jackson State. In total, she had 22 plate appearances last week without a strikeout. Defensively, Mangrello also threw out three would-be base stealers.

The Spartans are coming off of back-to-back run rule wins at the Amy Harrison Classic hosted by UC Riverside last week. They defeated Nebraska-Omaha 11-3 Sunday morning and then took down host UC Riverside 10-1 in the afternoon.
Michigan State plays in a deep conference as the Big 10 sent six teams to the NCAA Tournament a season ago, but the Spartans were not among that half dozen. MSU is on the right track inside the circle, as they are tied for the fewest earned runs allowed in their conference with Wisconsin at just 37 in 17 games played.

SUU is coming off a win against Wisconsin at the Sun Devil Classic where the Thunderbirds shutout the Badgers 2-0. Makall Whetten sent her fourth home run of the season over the left center wall, already doubling her HR total from last season.
The Thunderbirds are still looking for their big offensive breakout this season, as their two wins this year have come with SUU scoring only two runs in each, and having hit their season-high run mark of five just once.

Kennedi Sorensen has 12 hits on the year for the Highlanders, but half of them have left the park contributing a large portion to her team leading 14 RBI.
