Softball Uses Seven Run Inning to Earn A Split With Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO -- California Baptist University softball played its second doubleheader in as many days, this time splitting the two games against Sacramento State, falling in game one by a score of 3-2 before unloading late in game two for a 9-3 victory. This brings the Lancers season record to 3-1 while currently outscoring opponents 19-10.
GAME ONE
The opening game on Friday saw a lack of action at the plate from the Lancers as only Abby Robertson and Deja Westbrook recorded hits with two apiece. One of Robertson's connected perfectly and was sent sailing over the left field wall to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning. The Hornets would respond quickly, though, plating a pair in the bottom half of the frame and one more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to reach the final game score of 3-1.
CBU starting pitcher Giana Lopez saw her second stint of action of the season after being called on to close out game two from Thursday afternoon. Lopez allowed three runs on six hits, which would typically be enough to give the Lancers a shot at the win, but a lack of offensive support doomed the game one efforts.
GAME TWO
Looking for a series split, the Lancers came out in game two hitting early and often. Senior Brittany Galvez led off the game with a first-pitch double. The Lancers would load the bases with no outs and eventually plate one run in the opening frame when Amanda Argomaniz sent a sacrifice fly into the right field foul territory, scoring Ashley McBay.
After getting her fourth straight start in center field, McBay also showed her prowess to defend the grass by making multiple running and diving grabs to rob hits and save certain runs from the Hornets throughout the day.
The two teams would add one or two runs throughout the game until they reached the seventh and final inning with the Hornets leading 3-2. CBU opened that inning with their first four hitters reaching base. Argomaniz again came through with the clutch hit, sending a bouncing double into center field scoring Robertson and McBay to take a 4-3 lead.
After that, the flood gates opened. Jordan doubled to score another two Lancers while freshman Mia Alvarez recorded her first collegiate RBI on a two-out single. The Lancers would bat around the order and Ashley McBay would find herself in the batter's box for the second time that inning. With runners at second and third with two outs, McBay sent a single up the middle, scoring Alvarez and pinch runner Sanae Orme who avoided a tag at the plate, before McBay was tagged out attempting stretch the single into a double.
Once the dust had settled the Lancers were up 9-3 and it was time for game two starter Kerisa Viramontes to put away the Hornets in the bottom half of the inning. She would start the final half-inning with a walk before forcing a double-play and getting the final out via a pop-up to center. Viramontes recorded just two strikeouts but balanced them with 13 ground outs.
TOURNAMENT RECAP
Amanda Argomaniz was the team's most productive hitter, directly accounting for 10 of the Lancers' 19 runs this weekend, scoring three and bringing in seven more. McBay has returned to the team after a year off with a new fire, leading the team in batting average (.467), hits (seven), runs scored (four), and stolen bases (2-2).
Kerisa Viramontes is the clear ace of the staff, going 2-0 on the weekend picking up one win in each series, and throwing two complete games, the first of which went nine innings. Viramontes already has 13 strikeouts on the young season while maintaining a 1.75 ERA through 16 innings pitched. One area she will likely focus on in practice this week is control though as she walked 10 total batters this weekend.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lancers will travel to Las Vegas next weekend to take part in the Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. They will face hosts UNLV, along with Pac-12 opponents Utah and Weber State. Friday's tournament opener against the Rebels is set for a 12:30 pm first pitch.
