LAS VEGAS – California Baptist softball took on Pac-12 foe Utah for the first time in program history this afternoon and defeated the Utes by a score of 5-3 in game one of the tournament before dropping game two to UNLV 2-0 in the nightcap. Brittany Galvez and Katelyn Mangrello led the offensive charge on the day accounting for all five RBI's in the victory.
GAME ONE
Utah came into the game having just beaten Weber State in the game prior 4-3, but needing a seventh inning comeback to do so. They picked up right where they left off, scoring in the top of the first as well as the top of the second to quickly jump to a 3-0 lead.
Mangrello would get the Lancers on the board first in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch runner Michaila Harrington on the swing. It wouldn't be long before CBU took the lead as the senior Galvez sent the eighth pitch on a full count to right center, plating Mia Alvarez, Molly Kolander, and Makayla Jordan before stopping at second herself.
Already up 4-3, Mangrello added a little insurance in the top of the seventh when she sent her first homer of the year over the left center wall to go up by a pair of runs.
Starting pitcher Kerisa Viramontes would get into a bit of a jam as the bases would get loaded after an error, a walk, and a single, before forcing a fly out to Ashley McBay in centerfield to earn her third win of the season in her third complete game. Viramontes struck out eight through seven innings.
GAME TWO
CBU's bats never got going in game two on Friday after prior games ran late and an irrigation issue in the pitchers circle forced a lengthy delay to the start of their game against UNLV. The Lancers managed just four hits as the Rebels didn't fare much better, recording six hits of their own. The difference in the game came in the bottom of the third when a passed ball eventually resulted in a pair of unearned runs scored for UNLV.
Starting pitcher for the Lancers, Giana Lopez, tossed six innings striking out a pair, walking another pair, and but again falling victim to a lack of run support.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lancers will take on the Weber State Wildcats first in the 10 a.m. game slot before going up against the Utes again tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
