RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball will have a chance to get back to .500 on Wednesday night when it hosts Cal State Fullerton. It will be the 2021 season home opener for the Lancers before they head up to Palo Alto to take on Stanford, Cal and Santa Clara in the Stanford Invitational this weekend.
The Lancers and the Titans have first pitch set for 4 p.m. at John C. Funk Stadium, while Friday's tournament games against Santa Clara and Cal are slated for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. starts.
CBU began last week's Desert Classic well enough, splitting the opening day doubleheader, earning a 5-3 win against Utah before dropping a tight 2-0 game to UNLV in the nightcap. The Lancers went winless after that, dropping a pair to Weber State and a rematch to Utah over the course of Saturday and Sunday.
A trio of Lancers are currently hitting .300 or better, led by senior Brittany Galvez, who is hitting .393 on the back of a team-leading 11 hits. Makayla Jordan is second on the team in batting average at .320, but first in walks taken (six) and on-base percentage (.452). Ashley McBay is still hitting well, currently owning a .303 batting average while also leading the team in runs (six).
Cal State Fullerton is currently 5-7 on the young season, but six of those loses are at the hands of top Pac-12 teams in Oregon State (RV), No. 13 Arizona State and top-ranked UCLA. The Titans were picked to win the Big West Conference in the Preseason Coaches Poll, as they received seven of the eight possible first-place votes available.
Santa Clara will enter the tournament having played just one game so far this season, dropping a run-rule shortened 8-0 game to Stanford on Feb. 21. Cal comes in hitting .500, dropping its opener to Sacramento State, 3-0, before securing its first win against Saint Mary's the next day, 5-4. The host Cardinal enter the tournament at 5-0 after sweeping San Jose State in a season opening home series before taking the aforementioned game against Santa Clara.
