SB PREVIEW: Lancers Set To Take On Loyola Marymount and Utah Valley

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball opened Western Athletic Conference play last weekend and started with a series win against former PacWest foe Dixie State.
The Lancers are tied for second in the league standings with Seattle U, with a 12-17-1 overall and 2-1 WAC record. The Redhawks got a series win over NM State, while Grand Canyon is in first place in the league after it posted the only sweep of opening weekend over Utah Valley.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
CBU set the program's NCAA Division I era record on Friday when it racked up 29 hits during its doubleheader sweep. The Lancers tacked on another nine hits on Saturday for a grand total of 38 hits in three games. The weekend results improve the Lancers' all-time record against the Trailblazers to 22-19, a series which dates back to February 2007.
CBU was led at the plate by Ashley McBay, who recorded multiple hits in each game of the series and finished 8-14 with three runs batted in and one run scored. She improved her season batting average to .306, which is good for third on the team behind Tiana Patrick (.317) and Katelyn Mangrello (.357).
Kerisa Viramontes and Gretchen Goldsmith earned the two victories over Dixie State. Viramontes is leading the WAC in strikeouts with 79 and is the wins leader for CBU with an 8-5 record through 13 starts. Goldsmith is 3-1 while leading the conference in earned run average at just 2.65 in 42.1 innings pitched.
California Baptist will host the Lions of Loyola Marymount during a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday night before jumping back into WAC play when Utah Valley visits for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.

The Lions are 10-16 on the season, but don't be fooled by the numbers, LMU has played a daunting schedule thus far. They have played series against No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Oregon, RV Fresno State, Stanford, and Cal State Fullerton.
Loyola Marymount's two best regular hitters are Taylor Keinath and Molly Grumbo, with .308 and .289 batting averages, respectively. Though lacking in the hit department, the Lions can capitalize when on the base path, going 26-30 on stolen base attempts this season, while owning six multi-steal games and three games with four steals.
UVU BREAKDOWN
The Wolverines sit at 11-16 overall and will be looking to bounce back after getting swept in their first conference series. Utah Valley boasts three starters with batting averages over .300 with another pair just behind at .296 and .289. The Wolverines have 23 home runs on the season, which is tied for second in the conference with Tarleton State and is just one behind NM State's 24.
