CBU Secures Two Wins on Saturday

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday as hosts of the Lance Up Invite against Harvard and UC San Diego. The Lancers improved to 13-11 on the year and will turn their attention to the final day of the LUI Tournament.

CBU started their first game of Saturday strong after Kayla Lyon picked her first RBI of the day after she brought home Matti Severns to put the Lancers on the board. Havard responded immediately in the top of the second with a pair of runs via a single to center field and sacrifice fly. Kate Penberthy tied the game with her single that drove in Merissa Borkowski.

An error from the Crimson gifted CBU another run in the bottom of the fourth, but Harvard did not go down without a fight and scored another tying run with a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth. Priscilla Estrada got herself on base with a well-placed single to left field during the bottom of the fifth, and Severns put her in scoring position after she was walked by the Harvard pitcher. Kalena Burns stepped up to the plate and delivered when the Lancers needed it most, notching a three-run home run over the center field wall to solidify the win for CBU 6-3.

California Baptist's winning ways continued in their second game of the day against UC San Diego, coming up with 14 hits total against the Tritons. After UCSD put up a single run in the first, the Lancers answered with four runs of their own with a pair of singles and a fielder's choice. The Tritons were able to score again in the top of the second but were no match for another onslaught of runs from the Lancers. Lyon picked up her second and third RBI of the day after singling to left field, while Penberthy's double drove in another run. The Lancers sealed a run-rule win after tacking on another pair of runs, ending the match-up in the top of the fifth 10-2.

Lyon and Soto ended the day with three hits each while Burns ended with four RBI across the pair of games. California Baptist will return to the diamond on Sunday, March 10th to face Sacramento State for the final game of the Lance Up Invite.
